Length matters?

Dear Joe,

Would like to have your advice on the length of cable. Does the length of interconnect/speaker cable has any effect on sound? Read an article by Leo Fung, saying there is a optimum length. To be specific to your product, any sonic difference between 1m & 1.5m AU24 cable?

Theoretically YES. Because the longer the length, the higher the capacitance value, the sound may be warmer.

It was always believed that 1.5m length of interconnect sounds better than a 1m, especially within the Hong Kong Audiophile group due to Leo Fung. However, to me, to achieve equivalent 'slight' improvement' or even bigger improvement is just a snap with all these so called tweaking which I am very good...

Therefore, I see no point of spending more money on a longer length that you don't actually require. A one-meter AU24 is selling to 1388 members at S$660 whereas 1.5m is selling at S$900. Furthermore, for many cables, longer length sometimes mean "noisier", depending on the structure of the cable and the way of construction. Look at those antenna, aren't those longer one give better reception? Longer cable pick up more noises.

I didn't hear significant difference between a 1.0m Au-24 and 1.5m Au-24. According to the manufacturer, length doesn't matter at all.

IMHO, the shorter the cable, the better it is. The argument of which cable is superior will never be resolved. But nobody is going to tell you that having longer lengths yields benefits, especially in the real world where EMI/RFI, resonance, etc are everywhere. If you have to run long lengths, my experience is run long interconnects vs long speaker cables. My speaker cables are only a feet long each. The benefit of having short cables are aplenty - No need to worry about entangling with power cords, no need to lift it off the floor as it is already afloat, AND it is cheaper!
