Please teach me a few tricks...

Dear Joe Lee,

Hi, like yourself, I'm a music lover & hifi enthusiast. I'm pretty new & skeptical to tweaking but would like to give it a shot. You see, I've tried to tweak my Marantz CD-67Mk2se CD player & PM66SE KIS amp by placing marbles below the support. I thought that might have the same effect as cones to isolate external vibrations, as my rack is made of plywood - normal TV-VCR type not built for hifi. I also thought about blu-tacking the CD-player & Amp to the rack, but wonder which way would be better. I can't really tell any noticeable difference though with the marbles.

My speaker is ProAc Tablette 2000, which I consider the best upgrade I've done so far. Its simply muscial & easy to enjoy. Vocals has such presence & good soundstage. I love the sound of my system completely.

I'm very interested how you can tweak with one-cent & five-cents coins & jade etc, especially the improvements you did to Martin's system. Could you teach me a few tricks. I'll describe my room as much as I can to you:

3.5 x 4m HDB bedroom. Speakers blu-tac to stands with spike (sand-filled). Speaker lined on the longer side blasting in front of my bed. There are rugs below the speaker stands & curtains at the window. Normal power line. Plywood rack on rollers (don't really have any damping effects on the CDP & Amp).

I do not mind spending some money for tweaking but would be better if I don't have to.

My system:

        Marantz CD-67Mk2SE
        Marantz PM66SE KIS
        ProAc Tablette 2000
Van Den Hul The First i/c
Van Den Hul CS122 Hybrid spks cables

I hope you can give me some advise.

Dear Steve,

Over the weekend I have the honour to be invited to play around with three different systems. The most expensive system cost over S$80K and the most economical system is around S$3K. I think I have done something good to all the owners and seems to me they are all very happy.

I don’t charge for tweaking systems. It is my hobby and I really enjoy the praises from the owners...Nowadays I even brought along materials such as ebony woods which are quite expensive, crystals, metal ball-bearings, silver rings, etc. for tweaking sessions and gave them away for free if I found that they can help to improve the systems...I may not be able to afford doing so in future...

Problem is, I really have to listen to the system first before I can diagnose what is lacking, what needs to be improved...and how to improve...etc.

In you case, I am a bit puzzled because you said you couldn’t hear much noticable difference with the marbles.

Anyway, the following coin-tricks perhaps may work in your system:

1. The mattress of your bed infront of the speakers is playing the role of a huge absorber. It is good in a sense that you will have very rounded bass and rich mid, however, the high may be affected slightly. The soundstage may not be open enough. Behind the speakers please stick one 5-cent coin right at the centre on the wall (or window) at around 1 feet higher than the speakers (please adjust accordingly by listening).

2. Place an one-cent coin either on the lower part of the speaker stand or just stick one directly on the bottom of the speaker, right at the centre, to tighten up the bass. If you find the musicality is being reduced, simply stick one 5-cent coin on top of the speaker to compensate the effect.

3. Behind the speakers, at the left and right corner please stick one 1-cent coin on the floor and one 5-cent coin on the ceiling at each corner to open up the soundstage. However, If you find the soundstage becomes too open and out of control, lower the position of the 5-cent coins and reduce the distant between them.

4. Stick one 5-cent coin on the back of each speaker, right at the center. To improve the ambience and layering and give silkier mid...

5. The harshness of marbles may perhaps already been diluted by the soft plywood, that is good...but I am not sure. You are talking about marble slabs, right? Try 4 one-cent coin at the 4 corners of the marble. If it works, stick one more right at the center.

6. I bet you have already stick one 5-cent coin on the main power plug, right?

Just play around, try on top of the CDP and amp, there is no fix rules on how to apply the coin tricks...Most important is, do it step by step...
