Plinius power and ProAc

Dear Dr. Jon Wong,

My system consist of :

  • Plinius SA100 Mk3 power amp
  • Audio Research LS8 pre
  • Marantz CD10
  • Pro-Ac response one loudspeaker with Atacama 24 stands

Interconnect used the first, the second ( power to pre ) and van den hul CS122 bi-wire. ( tea track hybrid ) I am interested in upgrading to floor stand speakers. Please enlightened me with some valuable advise and opinion.

My listening area is 23ft by 16ft by 9ft ( height ) my budget is around $3000 to $6000. Any brands like KEF, Dynaudio, Pro-Ac or others you can advise to match my system efficiently please. Thank you.

Hi Jonver Roland Jude!

I suppose your Plinius power amp has yet taken full control of the ProAc response one. This is mainly due to the speakers hunger for big power and control to really sing. These pair of speakers are really hard to drive.

Pure class A amplifiers sound very nice, but they can sound too controlled than the efficient class AB type. In loud and dynamic sections, perhaps class AB type can sound more pleasing. If you upgrade to big floor standing speakers now, then you might just face with insufficient driving power or control. You might not be happy again.

Also, the CD player may not be fully release the system’s potential. The ProAc speakers are really excellent speakers. If they are not delivering, they should not be blamed in the first place. If you plan to keep the CD player, we advise you to add the valve buffer from Musical Fidelity or send the CD to us for upgrade. This is a must at the moment.

My suggestion is you should look for high efficiency speakers, such as the ProAc 3.8 or 4, which has better sensitivity. If you trade you current speakers in, it should not exceed your budget. For the power amplifier, feed it well using power cords from NBS.
