How can we know how good it is?

Dear Dr. Jon Wong,

1388 seems to rave about the CD upgrade. I can understand as this is business. I have my CD player upgraded before, and the sound is just so so. What makes yours so different? Is it about changing IC only? Can I do it myself?

Hello Alfred!

Thank you for writing in!

I understand there are many so called modifications which are only replacing the Op amp IC like NE5532 or NJM5532 in the CD player to better ones, such as Analog Device AD827. Perhaps replacing the original cap by a good plastic capacitors at the output as well. A good modification involves power supply and circuit configuration to maximize the performance of the player which is not possible in mass production line.

I was toying with the CD for many years, from using HA5112 to new AD type Op-amp, and also using LT317 type regulators, I believe CD players can be upgraded to a performance much higher than what most can expect. Changing Op Amp is just one of the many ways to improve the sound. But as my article has shown, dealing with the short falls in the digital domain, will reap a greater reward than just the analog stage.

Some modifiers also attempt to increase the output capacitor value to get lower bass extension. This incurs heavy cost penalty. Actually, that is not neccessary. What they need to do is to replace the resistor to ground (usually 20k) to something like 1M and can get much better results with something like a good 4.7uF cap. Better still, redo the circuit to DC coupled and eliminate the output capacitor.
