Transistor vs Valve Amplifier

Dear Dr. Jon Wong,

My friend just lent me a Micrex P1 power amp. This is the first time I have been listening to full valve. It was different from past experience. The sound stage is excellence (is this the character of using full valve) and not forgetting the vocal which sound very human. Can solid state power amp produce sound stage like valve power amp? If not, I am thinking of getting a second power amp (valve) for my system. Can you recommend one which can match my current system. I prefer valve that sound valve, not sound transitor. I know my CD player is the weak link. Please give some comment about my current system too. Music listen to are audiophile type. My system are :

  • CD player: Teac-VRDS10
  • Pre Amp: Sonic Frontier-SFL2
  • Power Amp: Krell-KSA150
  • Speaker: Sonus Faber-Minima FM2
  • Interconnect:
  • CD to Pre: Nordost-SPM
  • Pre to Power: Nordost-SPM
  • Speaker cable: Nordost-Blue Heaven

Thanks.

Wilson

Hello Wilson!

Welcome to the world of valve amplification. You will have no turning back. It is rather easy to make an excellent sounding valve amp, but it is very very difficult to make a truely nice sounding transistor amplifier.

Your Teac 10 is certainly not doing any justice to your system. You have two options: sent it to us for immediate analog section upgrade, or sell it off immediately and replace by a good transport and DAC.

Your Sonus Faber needs good power and control to maximize its capabilities. If you are after transparent vocals and quartet music, you can try Unison Research S6. Although its power output is not a lot, it can have very good control and sound.

You can also have a listen of Audio Space’s EL34 mono blocks. I am not sure if they can handle your speakers at explosive passages, but for vocals they will sound sweet.

If you can stretch your budget, why not have a listen to Jadis mono blocks? Perhaps you might want to give up your current power amp for it?

Finally, please kindly watch out for our Audience interconnects, soon to be available to members in October. You will not just hear the vocal, you will see and feel the singer standing right in front of you.
