Hum from speakers

Dear Dr. Jon Wong,

I have a problem regarding something that sounded like a hum, but is not really a hum. This sound is coming from my speakers and it comes and goes at irregular intervals. And if I increase my pre-amp volume, it gets louder.

Please advise. What's wrong or any remedy.

Hello Taurus!

It could be possible that some contacts are no good, like grounding, or the volume control grounding is no good.

If in a worse case, something in the amplifier may be failing. But if the hum is present in both speakers and come and go together, it could be connections problem. Could you please describe to us what are the makes of your equipment?

My suggestion is you try to clean all the contacts using those contact cleaner sprays. Swap the RCA cables between left and right. If all fails, then send the pre and power amp for a checkup.

Good luck.
