Humming Amp Dear Dr. Jon Wong, How much hum is deem acceptable for an amp? I currently own a valve integrated amp, whenever I put the amp from standby to operate mode there is a humming sound coming from the main transformer side. Is this normal? Also the humsound varies sometimes I could hear hum from more than 3ft away, sometimes I could hear it only when I put my ear near the transformer side. It is not constant the only thing that is constant is the humming sound. I could not hearany hum sound from the speakers or any other equipments. Will the hum soundaffect the quality of the music. I would appreciate if you could answer my question, thank you. Samual |
Hello Samual!
What you described is not really humming, but a transformer that is near saturation and interference from the mains. This happens to transformers that are old, running nearly at its fully potential or hysteresis with the iron core of the transformer. If your speakers are not giving humming sound, then there is nothing wrong with the amplifier. What you should check are the following: 1. Check if the voltage applied to the amp is corrent (230V). 2. Use proper power filter (please e-mail me for details). 3. Check if the transformer holding hardware is loose. It is not normal or a good sign to hear the buzzing 3 ft away. |
