Hungry Speakers Dear Dr. Jon Wong, I plan to upgrade my current speaker (Monitor Audio Silver 5i) by the end of this year. The following is some of my choices: ProAc Response 1.5, Sonus Faber Concerto/Grand Piano/Signum, Dynaudio Contour 1.3 MK II Should I also change my current amp. (MF A3), in order to produce warm, soft, mellow, and detail sound? I like jazz, vocal and acoustic guitar. Which speaker and amplifier should I use?? One of my combination is Audio Space Mini 7 + 9 (pre & power amp) & ProAc Response 1.5. Musical Fidelity A3 CR & Sonus Faber Grand Piano/ProAc Response 1.5 (someone says MFA3 CR has the tube voice and also solid state dynamics, is it true?) Please give me your comments. Thanks a lot! Hello Eric!
The speakers you list are all of the same characteristics -> not easy to drive unless there is a lot of potential from the power amp! Bring your MF A3 and ask to audition the speakers with your amplifier. Play some difficult passages, and you will know where the amplifier can go. If you want to keep your amplifier, I would suggest you listen to Elec (new models) and the HGP before you look at others. They represent what the new technology can offer. Even if you want to use the Audio Space 7 + 9, they will cope well with the speakers. This is a very good option - use valve amp and very high efficiency speakers. If you want added bass, add a well designed sub woofer such as the Hsu research. The reason being when you use too muscular an amplifier, the delicate and refined nature might be compromised. Unfortunately, if you use small power amplifier on any of the amplifiers you mentioned, then you might be disappointed, sooner or later. Dynaudio, espeically need a very good amplifier which throws out a lot of power. Sonus Faber, apart from the ‘Armati’(?) are all pretty difficult to drive well. Pro Ac Respond 1.5 needs care in amplifier choice. |
