Break in tubes? Freeze the tubes?

Dear Dr. Jon Wong,

Is there another way of running in tubes without using existing components to dol it.

Thanks!

Hello TS!

When you say existing components I suppose you are referring to the amplifier and the system?

Well, you can get someone to build a tube burn in machine for you. It should have a power supply for the filament, and a B+ high voltage supply. Then it should drive a dummy load for say about 48 hours.

Sounds troublesome, I would rather burn them in on the power amplifier...

Anyway, if you have some new tubes, have you tried ‘freezing’ your tubes before using them? I used to freeze my tubes for about a week, then slowly defrost them. When they are at room temperature for a few days, and are completely dry, I burn them in on the amp and they sounds wonderful. Have you tried that? This is borrowed from some British fanatics who freeze their tubes in liquid Nitrogen. I wonder how the tubes did not crack. Anyway, they claim the sound is more superior.
