Anonymous - you touched on the main issues... Dear Dr. Jon Wong, To start off, I must say that 1388.com has provide me with a valuable source of information which cannot be obtain anywhere else. I have to thank you for that. This site has also generate so much interest that make me think of overhauling my current home entertainment system! However, due to my limited resources, the $5000 system which your site recommended is way beyond my budget.I do not know if you guys are interested in writing articles on system which are lower in price but it will be very helpful for people like myself ( or it could be just me.....). Anyway, I have a few questions and one request, see if you could me help me on this. Questions: 1. Is receiver as good as amp? I have look through Denon, Yamaha's receivers but are they worth buying over an amp like NAD. 2. I want to buy component by component. ie. speakers first then amp\receiver.. How do I think if these combination works? 3. Budget speaker (like Tannoy Mx series) offer bi-wiring but review say that it does not help. How true is this? 4. Any suggestion on speakers which are less than $1000 and could produce good sound with receiver (maybe Denon AVR1801)? Anonymous |
Hi Anonymous!
Well, in the past four years Joe was not in the Hi Fi business. He has also given away his system part by part! Although he was left with nothing, he started listening to hi fi systems that cost at least S$100,000+. Well, his friends are supportive. And also all really know what Joe can do for a system. Without the ‘Joe Lee’ touch the system is incomplete?! Perhaps this was why he is still so ‘proud’ and ‘snobbish’? No lah, actually, the reason Joe asked for recommendations of S$5000 was just an idea thrown to several retailers and dealers. Brandon responded well, and after listening the combination we truely feel that it is worth recommending. There are more systems coming up for sure! Now, of course, we are looking at a S$2000+ system. Later, we may even introduce a S$1000 system (good for students or just a 2nd system in the study). There is nothing embarassing about this. Fork out S$1000 for something is a big thing for me as well, I could end up divorced by spouse. If I can, I would like to do installments! Any bankers or finance guys reading this? Please help us by offering a easy credit facility, which is beneficial for everybody! If every month so many rich Singaporeans or PRs can easily fork out S$40,000 for COE, making the COE prices ever climbing, then S$1000-S$5000 for a really enjoyable Hi Fi set is really nothing! Right? Imagine spending S$40,000 on a camera system or Hi Fi set! Wow! I will ‘kow tao’ to you! Life is too short and too hard, we should give ourselves the best. It is pointeless to live day in day out just to report to monotonous work and keep paying endless list of bills for nothing, right? As for your questions: 1. You should get better performance from an integrated or pre-power amp. 2. Choose your favourite speakers first! Listen to as many as possible before you decide. Very often I feel the magazines are killing the audio business. It is because they discourage people from listening/audition the actual thing. They say XXXX brand sounds sweet, mellow and detailed. The everyone can become expert and say ‘well, XXXX is sweet mellow and deatiled’. What is it really? No one can tell. Please, audition the speakers as if you are choosing your wife. 3. Bi-wires sometimes does not sound coherent. This is true. 4. Below S$1K? If I am not wrong, I saw some Loth X speakers on offer which are really attractively priced. If you are REALLY tight for budget, you can consider DIY speakers. I built my Dyaudio Foccus below S$1K in UK, and it was really wonderful. I miss it. All the best. |
