Learn more about Hi Fi and gatherings Dear Dr. Jon Wong, As I am still new, with regards to the world of high-end hi-fi, it's hard for me, to describe to U, what my dream system is. Basically, what I wish for is having REALLY GOOD speakers/DVD/CD players/amp, to enjoy movies 'n' music at home. Like everybody says: Good things don't come cheap neither are cheap things good! When one talks about upgrading, money comes into mind. I have only moved into my current HDB apartment only about 7+ mths. My wife and I have spent a big chunk on my home + appliances (in excess of $60K). It will take me some time, unless I strike this weekend 4-D, for me to have a "tok kong" hi-fi system. In the meantime, I am very keen to upgrade myself in terms of knowledge in the world of hi-fi. Could you recommend any good book/s on hi-fi. About one year ago, I bought one book titled:" HOME THEATRE FOR EVERYONE BY ROBERT HARLEY" from Klas Audio from the Adelphi shopping centre. Any other books that U can recommend ??? What I have now (bought as a package!) is a Sony amp STR DE925 with Cabasse Jersey floorstanders /Armen centre/Pampero surround spkrs, dvd is Toshiba SD2109. Any comments on my system? Be as objective as U can. The system was bought at the beginning of this year from Margil Hi-Fi. Is it value for money? Would your friends mind (may lack privacy) when U mention that U hope to have monthly or bi-monthly gatherings for members? The venue, though, may be cosy, may not accomodate many members. Having products agents lend us their premises may be a better idea, as it can save costs as well as allow many more members to attend. Thanks! Michael Kang |
Hello Michael! Sorry for the late reply!
Many people think that Hi Fi is about money status. They spend tens of thousands or even more to buy systems. My suggestion is unless one’s skills is good, do not listen to irresponsible people and spend a fortune on a system one cannot handle. Nothing is more sad than spending a million and turn out to be something that sounds as pathetic as a mini compo. If someone nasty knows about this, then one’s name will be used for jokes that may not be very nice. I had seen it happen quite a few times. Very often upgrades become sponsoring some people to buy better cars, and the system is a downgrade in actual fact! If you are really interested in upgrading your skills, please support 1388.com! Most magazines are filled with advertisements and may be biased because they need advertisements for revenue! For your home theatre system, why not you read my article ‘Creating Wonders from Nothing’. Mr. Gui has made his system so stunning, and he uses Kenwood amplifiers and old Monitor Audio speakers. Mind you, the performance is really stunning. Good suggestion on the HiFi gathering venue. However, if we organise it in the shops, then which one? If I do it in A, then looks like we are promoting for A. How would B feel? What would B think? Then it comes to C. The worse thing is we may not be very familiar with what A, B or C are trying to sell. What I have in mind is 1388.com will main use designs, equipment and amplifiers built by 1388.com. We will choose a neutral teritory and we can remain neutral! This is for the benefit of the members. It will be very embarassing if we have to praise products from B when we run a gathering in A’s shop. For instance, on week we can say ‘Challenge of the Power Cords’ in a specially arranged restaurant. We start at 11:00am with dim sum buffet style. Then from 12:00 to afternoon, you never know who will bring what? For all of us, we can listen to perhaps 20 power cords in one afternoon. It will be fair and square, and all will enjoy! We can also have talks and demonstrations that we can conduct freely. Anyway, we are very open minded and flexible. We would love to run demos and talks in shops, we love to run free gatherings in people’s private homes, and we would love to do some really enjoyable time in selected Dim Sum restaurant. Up to you! As long as everyone is happy! |
