Electrocompanient CD too bright?

Dear Dr. Jon Wong,

I just bought an Electrocompanient EMC1 Reference CD player. I was told that this CD player is very bright. Have you heard it before? What is your opinion?

Hello D,

I find the EMC1 very analytical and musical. ‘Very Bright’ is a relative term and can be easily manipultated. Let me explain:

1. Use a high capacitance signal cable vs a silver cable. Both cables can affect any CD player. We therefore cannot say the player is ‘bright’ in this case.

2. Use a amplifier and speaker combination that sounds very thin. Any CD palyer would sound towards the ‘bright’ side.

3. Even for speaker systems like the G1. If you do not know how to set the sub woofer cross over point, you can make the system sound too harsh or too mellow. Can you judge the CD player in this case?

You have a very well designed player. Tweak your system well and you will be well rewarded.
