Improve warmth and definition

Dear Dr. Jon Wong,

I would appreciate to obtain your advice for the improvement of my current system (System, goals and budget described below). Thanks in advance for your help and congratulationsa for your excellent website.

  • Current system
    • AMP Denon AVR 2700
    • DVD/CD Sony DVP S7700
    • Main Loudspeakers: JM LAB 706 Opale (purchased 11 years ago)
    • Central Speaker: JM LAB Cobalt CC20
    • Surround Speakers: JM LAB Cobalt SR 20
    • Subwoofer: no

Goals

I would like to obtain a clearer and warmer restitution of my audio system as first goal. My secondary goal would be to improve the sound restitution of my DVD.

Comment

My initial diagnostic was to change my main Loudspeakers (JM LAB Electra 920). However, based on discussions with my Friends... I have know that this initial choice is perhaps not the best one to reach my goals, notably improvement of Audio records restitution.

Budget

My budget for the improvement of my system is currently equal to GBP 2000. I would appreciate if you could help me by providing me with preliminary comments on the best way(s) to improve my system and reach my goal (clearer and warmer restitution of my audio records).

Hello Ghildalia,

Thank you very much for your kind comment and support!

I believe you also know that changing speakers may not be the thing you want to do. There is a quick and easy solution to achieve a warm, detailed, lucid and wonderful sound from your system: Buy a BUFFER stage and install it between your DVD and Av amp. Or, you can insert the buffer between the pre-out and power-in of the amp, if there is such an option. The buffer will improve the sound much better than buying a more expensive pair of speakers.

I hope you would wait for sometime for our Bit88. If you use it between the DVD player and the amplifier, it will totally transform your system. The price is hardly touching GBP100, but there is a valve stage and DSP modules. Perhaps you might think it is too cheap? Anyway, mass production and simplicity allowed us to market it at this price. We could have asked for GBP500 if we put it in a nice casing!

Finally, why not you conisder adding the Hsu Research sub woofer? For its price, there is nothing to beat it, and the sub woofer can bring more listening pleasure.

All these add together are less than half of your budget. You can have more money for new DVD titles! May I suggest buying The 5th Element DVD and listen to the female alien sing again when you have the Bit88 and the sub woofer installed!
