All rounder DVD player?

Dear Dr. Jon Wong,

I have the following setup:

• Denon AVR 1800 (6months old)
• Pioneer CLD 3760 (4 yrs old)
  
• AE Aegis one (3 months old)
  

I want to upgrade my system by change my CD player to a DVD player which has a good CD playback capability. My Budget is around 1K. Do u have any to recommend? Does it make sense to have a highend CD player with my setup?

Hello Kim,

If you are into movies, I would suggest you look at a DVD. It is because you do not want to miss the latest DVD titles! My recommendation would be you look for a DVD in the price range of about $600. But please do not expect out of this world sound from DVD. They will sound more smooth and analog, but not neccessary superior. It is because of the poor clock circuits in DVD players.

At the same time, you can look for out board DAC (Digital to Analog Converter). For about $400, you can pick up a very good second hand unit. If your Laser disc player has a Digital Output facility, then the player can act as a very good transport. The outboard DAC will ensure it has superb sound. Again, the DVD may not be superior than your LD as a transport.

If buying a DAC is out, then alternatively, you can wait for our CD/DVD upgrade service that will ensure your DVD sounds like a high grade CD player. By then if you do not play laser disc, you can trade in your LD player for something else.
