Improvement on DVD sound

Dear Dr. Jon Wong,

Pl/s help me to forward this question for advice to Dr Jon Wong. I tried to e-mail using the Dr. Hi-Fi page but could not get thru. Dr Jon recommend to me, to audition some DAC, to improve my current home-theatre system (wrote in on 25th August). My questions are:

1) What is DAC-is it a device for improving the sound quality of the DVD player. Is it a separate unit to be attached to the DVD player?

2) What is the average cost of a good typical DAC?

3) Any recommended makes of DAC.

I am relatively new to the world of high end hi-fi, having only bought a home-theatre about 6 mths ago, and wants tolearn how to upgrade my system.

Thank You.

P.S. By the way, A VERY BIG THANK YOU FOR SETTING UP THIS WEB SITE.IT CERTAINLY GOES A LONG WAY TO HELP US READ UP AND KNOW MORE ABOUT THE WORLD OF HI-FI AND TO SEEK EXPERT HELP/ADVISE AND PRODUCT KNOWLEDGE!

Hi Michael,

My apologies on the corrupted WEB page. My laptop crashed and after rebuilding my system from backup, there were some bugs. They are all fixed now. Thank you.

DAC stands for Digital to Analog Converter. It is a seperate piece of equipment that is attached outboard of the DVD player.

Unfortunately, many DVD in the market suffer from serious Jitter problem within the digital circuits, and cannot fully release the full potential of the 24bit 96kHz system. There are two ways to solve this problem:

1. Modify the DVD player clock circuits or 2. Add an external DAC unit.

The modification means causing a warranty issue. Also, not all DVD players can be modified due to the availability of the crystals. I am thinking of offering a service to 1388.com supporters to upgrade the master clock in their DVD player. However, I believe not many people would want their player modified.

The alternative method is to use an external DAC unit. DAC units are available for many years, but you should only look for those that has 96kHz 24bit capability. It should also have facility to reduce the jitter. Forget about those old DACs because it could be a waste of money. Look around the local retailers, you can surely see many of them on display. Avoid using the Toslink, which is the optical link. Toslink sounds inferior.

A good DAC could cost around S$1000. The DAC is very beneficial if you are demanding on audio quality.
