Mixing RCA and XLR

Dear Dr. Jon Wong,

I am not sure if I should use mix of RCA and XLR inconnect cables on my systems. In other words, can I use a mixture or preferable to use only one type throughout the systems. Even though using XLR sound better.

Pls enlighten me.

Thanks!

Wilson

Hello Wilson,

Sorry for the late reply!

There is no problem using a mixture of RAC and XLR, (provided it is limited to the path from one set to another set! Of course, you should not use XLR on left channel and RCA on right channel, just a joke!)

You do not need to use XLR throughout. RCA is single ended (one ground and one signal wire). For XLR, there are three wires (one ground, one + signal and one - signal. The + and - are recombined at the input so that it cancels off the noise picked up during transmission).

You might not hear distinct differences if you cables are all about 1 to 2 meters long. But if the length is longer than 5 meters, you may hear the difference. Actually, earlier XLR did not show any superior sound than RCA, because the conversion to balanced was done via an Integrated Circuit (IC).

There is no cause of worry to mix RCA or XLR.
