Speaker placement for bass Dear Dr. Jon Wong, I have a pair of speakers (Mordaunt Short Performance 880) using Low Frequency Boundary Loading (floor reinforcement) which does not comes with spikes. However, my room is using 1/2 inch carpets, how can I place my speakers? Using granite slabs or splinth? If bass busters/sonex waffles are placed at the rear wall and corners, does it mean that the speakers can be placed closer to the rear/side walls? Alan |
Hello Alan, If you use slabs then that may not the best solution. I would suggest you try to elevate the speakers. Certainly, there are some space at the bottom of the speaker. Go to a hard ware shop, you can buy metellic cones (used for surveying). The cones should be, in your case, at least two inch tall. Attach the cone securly to the base of the speakers using strong double sided tapes, and then let the speaker stand on the cones. Of course, the sharp end points to the bottom towards the floor. Good speaker placement can avoid bass boom even without the use of sonex. However, the use of sonex may not cure the boom problem completely. One effective method I learned from Joe Lee was, buy a foam mattress (single bed). Place the mattress in between the speakers and up against the wall. You may use a pleasant looking bed sheet to cover up the mattress. It is the most effective method I heard. If neccessary, buy two more on the sides. These are fair cheap but their large area really works. |
