Local technicians and local made power amplifier problems Dear Dr. Jon Wong, I think I'm probably not supposed to do this but here I am trying anyway. I was wondering if you will be able to tell me where I can find a good (honest) tube amp technician. Of course, whatever the outcome, I cannot and will not hold you responsible for assisting in the first place. It's just that there are far too many less than honest guys doing this out there as a business. By the way, I have an observation. It seems the hobbyist among us are really nice people always willing to share a view or offer an advice but those who makes a living out of it, whether selling or servicing the equipmentsc are often less than above-board in their dealings. Do you have this same experience? Andrew |
Andrew, Honestly Andrew, I don't have any bad experiences in dealing with any technicians because I never need one. I always have the best technician besides me. He is Doctor Jon Wong and I can only recommend this guy. He is an electronics professional designed many tube or mosFET amplifiers in his past. He knows everything about circutry. He is currently my partner. I think he may be able to help! What are your problems anyway? Joe Lee Well, I am certianly NOT the best tecnician and I do not repair amplifiers for a living. I would rather call myself a person having very strong interests in audio equipment. I could fault find or improve things using my enigineering skills. Perhaps you can give us a call? We would love to discuss things with you. Take care. Andrew! Nice talking to you! The 8 pieces of GE 6KD6 are TV "sweep" tube, used in audio or radio amplifiers. 6KD6 is no longer in production and is scarce and expensive. Perhaps it is suggested to modifying the amp to accept the Svetlana EL509 in the future... There are circuit diagrams available. The EF86 is the pentode input tube, and the 2 pieces of 6L6 could be the phase splitters. The 4 rather big pieces of cylinders behind the tubes are the filter capacitors. The EF86 and the 6L6 are coupled via signal capacitors to the power valves. From the symptoms you have given, we need to check for leakages or loose conections. Also, we need to check the biasing of the valves you have. Finally, I must say that I am an engineer and I do not repair amps for a living. I believe I can solve your problem, but really I cannot promise! Bring up and see! (of course there will be no charge!) 1388.com is not an audio repair company, but we try to help our supporters. In your case, since it is a locally made amp and there is no agent support, we do not mind giving you a hand! |
