How often do I need to change the tubes?

Dear Doc,

How often do I need to change the tubes on my pre/power amp?And where can I get good quality tubes? I'm currently using Conrad Johnson PV10 and Micrex.

Thanks!

Hello Zulkifli!

Tubes have limited life span. Usually, for normal listening, after 2 years you should have the tubes replaced by qualified technicians. The Conrad Johnson have the normal usual tube types which are widely available. One obvious sign of an aged tube is the high frequency is faded, and from the tweeter you can hear some sound someone is crush paper.

You should contact the local agent, or you can buy quality tubes from local retailers such as Larry Hi Fi, or you can mail order, or e-mail order some exotic types from UK or USA. For 12AX type, the Chinese or Soviet tubes can both give excellent results.
