CD Player upgrade to VCD Player

Dear Doctor,

I currently have a Pioneer Mini Hi-fi CD player (3 CD-changer). Out of curiousity, is it possible for this player to be upgraded to a VCD player.

If yes, will the special features like sound selections that come with it be affected? Where can I do the upgrading of the CD to VCD player?

Dear Yazid!

Upgrading from a Mini CD player to a VCD is technically possible. However, this is actually modification of the CD player, which will certainly void the warranty.

A new chip or MPEG decoder board has to be added to provide for the Video output facility. It involves some drilling of the chasis to provide a RCA socket for the Video output connection. The cost of modification by some third party, independent engineer is at least S$100 as advertised in some local papers.

Considering you can buy a new, good quality VCD player (3 VCD changer) that comes with one year warranty, why not purchase a new unit? You stand less risk to bear the pain of problems after modification, and peace of mind. These are widely available in Sim Lim, People’s Park, and the major local outlets.
