CAL Delta and AudioNote Dear Dr. Jon Wong, My system consists of :
Over the recent few months, my CAL transport has become very sensitive to the discs being played. It skips randomly and very frequently. CDRs burnt on the computer skips even more seriously. The CAL was tested by Stereophile to have very good tracking. Is this a sign that the laser is near the end of its life? Or isit something that a new clocking chip can solve? I have tried cleaning the lens with Finyl but to no avail. I have also tried cleaning the lens with the AudioTechinica cleaning discs. No improvement as well. Should i only upgrade the clock on the transport? How about the clock on the DAC itself? The technology for the DAC1 is quite ancient and i am not sure if it is worthwhile to upgrade the clock. Pls advise. Thank you. Ohlins |
Hello Ohlins,
The lens and the transport mechanism needs tuning if it is out. Also, the lens/motor mechanism could age and die over time. I always read reviews carefully and never believe 100% of what the author says. There are too many parameters that affect the actual performance of the player, including the reviewer’s personal opinion as well. Once, I opened up a very expensive CD transport (cost more than S$2000) for a clock upgrade. It turned out to be it was actually a Sony mid priced player with the analog section ripped out. The transformer was upgraded to something bigger. It is sad to see people make money by such method. Well, the transport received a raving good review. To me, it sound just as any other Sony mid priced player. Have your transport serviced by the agent. After that, you can consider letting me upgrade the clock on your transport, improve the digital interface on the Audionote and upgrade the analog section of your DAC. You will find that your DAC and transport can approach your LP12 performance. No kidding! |
