Chord LS5/12A and TagMcLaren

Dear Dr. Jon Wong,

My system consists of:

  • CDP/LP: Sony DVP-7700, AudioNote DAC-One
  • Pre/Power: TacMcLaren Pre PA20R; Pwr 100P
  • Speakers: Chord LS5/12
  • Cables: Golded Ref (DAC->Pre); Golden Cross (Pre->Pwr)
  • Room Size: 100 sq.ft
  • Music Preference: All
I am using a TagMcLaren 100P (each channel with rated 100W/8 Ohm and typical 125W/8 Ohm) to drive a pair of Chord LS5/12A speakers. Do you think the power is sufficient to drive the LS5/12A to optimize the speaker performance? If it does not, I want to but either 60P or 100P to bi-amping the LS5/12. Which additonal power amp is more suitable and cost effectively. My thanks !

Hello Fai,

You system is very well setup and it will be ridiculous to say that the Tag monoblocks do not have enough power. Bi amping will have an exponential increase in price but some inprovement in performance. I feel that what you are looking for is the ‘Uoomp’ factor in your system.

There are a few solutions. First of all, I highly recommend you to use Musical Fidelity Tube Buffer between your pre and power amplifier. Yes, there is already a tube stage in your Audio Note I suppose, but the tube between the pre and power amp will do some wonders. The system will sound a lot more powerful and the bass will be deeper.

Secondly, I also recommend you to allow us to modify your SonyDVP or Audio note’s clock. The original clock, even in expensive players, are usually of low quality and can sound very poor. You can have the option of using Tricord clock or our 1388 clock.

And finally, why not have a free trial of this Au24 cables? I am sure the cables will release more potential from your current equipment.

Happy listening.
