Dual purpose system recommendation

Dear Dr. Jon Wong,

I am into Jazz, Guitar, Concerto

First of all, let me say that I admire you site and really think that you are provide people with lots of Hi-Fi information. Keep up the GREAT work.. I am a novice at this, so could you please help. Currently residing in an HDB 5 Room. Need to purchase systems for the living room and was wondering if you can render some help. I would like to buy a home theater system with some capabilities of providing reasonable listenable music - prefer jazz, guitar and concert type of music ... I have looked around and found that it is difficult to get a configuration for my needs.

Most people recommend that I get 2 sets of speakers and receivers for the 2 purposes of home theater and music - 2 sets of everything ??? A bit costly.... I wish I could spend that kind of money but as everyone is, I am a VERY tight on budget - below S$4,500 - Is there anyway you can recommend me some stuff that I can check out... for dual purposes of home theater and Hi-Fi sound... I understand that with that kind of money, I expect only a certain level of quality...you pay peanuts cannot expect monkeys !!! Someone recommended me the following for about $3,000 :

  • Cambridge SoundWorks Tower Home Theater
  • JBL System 1
  • Marantz SR5000
  • DVD player

Any suggestions ? Please advise ....

Roy

Hello Roy,

Thanks for the comments.

I feel than with your budget, you can get a very good system if you do not buy speakers which are meant for AV purposes.

Here are my suggestions:

  • Dynaudio speakers (~$700)
  • KEF Cresta 1 (used as rear and mid speakers ~$500?)
  • Speaker Stands (~$300)
  • Marantz SR5000 or DENON
  • Pioneer DVD player with multi code ($700?)
  • Audience Conductor cables ($150)
  • REL subwoofer or equivalent (?$700)

Finish the system with our Bit88 (launching soon !!) This will be a very nice sounding system!
