Types of Platform

Dear Dr. Jon Wong,

I am trying out some materials for platform, which would you recommend? Why is it some platforms from Hong Kong are so expensive?

Hello Richard!

The secret of nice sounding plateform is it must be very stiff and the material is made of wood or some organic materials. By using composite materials, you can tune the whole spectrum of the resonance.

If you look at Sound Mechanics and others, you will find that they are actually very ingenious and also not easy to make.

From the first point, you can see that if you use a single piece of material to make a platform, the result will not be spot on. MDF is basically compressed paper, so it will not sound good.

Here is one suggestion: buy two chopping boards from Ikea (the Maple wood type). Find a piece of copper, iron or steel plate, and cut to about the size of the chopping boards. Sandwich the metal place using the two chopping boards. Place the pre-amp or CD player on the platform. You will find it sounds totally different!

Apart from the metal plates, you also can try ceremic (even better) or glass. If you can find those thick glass slabs, it will be very good.
