Speaker Stand Fillings

Hi, Sand and lead pallets are commonly used to mass load speaker stands. There are also $$$ items sold in hifi shops for the same purpose. I'm more interested in trying out DIY mass loading with common items. A dealer had recommended me to try the following three:

1. sawdust
2. arcylic pebbles (commonly used in fish tank)
3. limestone pebbles

Would like to have your opinion on the different mass loading results and any recommendation on other "commom" mass loading material.

Regards.

Hello Jonathan!

I am very surpried by the types of materials you mentioned. Here are my experiences:

1. Sawdust - results not significant

2. Pebbles - sounds dull and lacks dynamics

The best bet is still to goto Pasir Ris beach and scoop some dry sand, or go to the hardware stores to buy small ball bearings. If you can find lead shots, it will be better. The main aim is to increase the mass so that the stand becomes a solid support, and does not resonante with the speakers. These are cheap, and surely will make your stand sounds good.

Have fun!
