Bring back the Midrange

Hi Joe/Jon,

  • CDP/LP: Philips CD650/MSB link
  • Pre/Power: SFL-1 Sig/Mini 1998
  • Speakers: LothX 1
  • Cables: Audioquest/NBS/Thurdersnake
  • Room Size: 18ftX14ft
  • Music Preference: Jazz.Classical ,vocal

Before this configuration,my preamp was Canary audio CA601. When using this CA601, I find it focus alot in the mid-range, quite lean in the low, soudstage was restricted.

Presently with this SFL-1, I got my tight bass, the soudstage is much better (beyond my speakers boundaries), BUT the midrange is not as crispy as on CA601. Is there any chance to get it back on my SFL-1.

Thanks for S.O.S

Steven

Dear Steven,

The SFL1 and the Canary uses different circuitary for different type of music projection. Both are excellent peformers.

I suppose what you want is better transparency in the mid from the SFL1. Why not try the Au24 interconnect betweem the CD and SFL1?

At the mean time, I suggest you to buy or borrow or get five 9 pin miniature tubes. If you can find dead tubes it will be better. Something like the 12AX or the 6DJ8 will do. Place two tubes (both pressing against each other) on top of the LothX speaker. Place them near the edge of the front face of the speakers. Place one tube (standing on the 9 pins) on top of your CD player.

Listen again. Please tell me what you think after that.
