Vocal Sound harsh?

Hi Jon,

My system consists of the following:

  • CDP/LP: Marantz 94, Intercon LiveCable X.33, Powercord AFA-Zeus
  • Pre/Power: Accuphase E203 Integrated, Powercord AFA -Hera
  • Speakers: Rogers Studio 3 sitting on 27
  • Cables: Spk-Soniclink AST200 biwire, Powerdistributor-AFA Poseidon
  • Room Size: 8x10x15
  • Music Preference: vocals, light jazz
Firstly, My CD player and Amp are each sitting on a piece of granite and would like to change to the chopping board from ikea that you recommended, but unfortunately none of the price range close to $39 could be found.

As I'm using an old Marantz CD94 which serve me well, thus not to sure as whether to send to you for upgrading, or buy a DAC, or replace it.

After having tried your one cent and five cent tuning method on the wall, main switch box, power point, powercords and speakers. It sounded much detail, cleaner and better bass (not much), but it also sounded harsh in the vocals. What I have done wrong? (my bed is right infront of the system due to limited space available)

Lastly, kindly advise me which is the weak link in my system.

Thanks for your kind attentions.

Best regards,

Simon Ho

Dear Simon

I think by Christmas Ikea should have a fresh stock of chopping boards? As long as they are big enough for the CD player, and the thickness is about one inch, you should buy it.

Also, you can try using other wooden things like wood peices. Try to buy some mahogany or maple wood ornaments and place them on the set. You can also buy those little jade pieces, silver pieces from the roadside stalls. If you can afford it, buy a few pieces of nice jades from shops and try! If the sound is no good, give to Misses and she will be very pleased! Jade will make the sound less harsh and more ‘expensive’. The silver will make the high frequency more detailed. Just place on the player and experiment.

Granite will sound more dead and cold. I would suggest you use the combination of wood, jade and silver rings. Not a lot of money involved, but the results are amazing and fun.

If you complain the vocals are harsh, I can imagine. CD sounds are harsh basically, because of the generic NE5532 or NJM2114 type IC used. You can try to put a piece of wood, or even chopping board on the player.

I would love to service and upgrade your player, but time is a premium at the moment. Please kindly contact me for details.

At the mean time, why not consider our Au24 interconnects for a really audible and impressive upgrade? Please contact Joe about the cables.
