| Balanced Connection - Rumours! Hi Jon, Can you comment on the balanced wire connection. As long as the ground wire is in place, does it make any difference to switch the (+ve) Hot and the (-ve) Cold terminals the other way round? There is a rumour that for Jeff Rowland power amplifiers, the Hot and Cold terminals are connected the other way round. As such, if I use non-Jeff pre-amp or other sources, I need to flip the +ve and -ve terminal on the speakers to maintain correct phase. I think it is nonsense. Can you explain the technical side in lay terms? Ben |
Dear Ben, For balanced connection, the +ve and -ve are sent on long wires to prevent noise contamination. The +ve and -ve are recombined at the receiving end, so that the noise is canceled and the signal is boosted. This is called common mode rejection. I tried to build my own balanced transmitter and receiver. I realized there was no harm exchanging the +ve and -ve. It is like Joe Lee took AYE, and Jon Wong took PIE, or Joe Lee took PIE and Jon Wong took AYE, both fat men will still arrive at your house and demand you to treat them delicious bowls of Bak Kuk Teh soup. There are many technical papers on Analog Device web site at http:///www.analogdevices.com to explain the details of balanced transmission. As confirmed on your system using XLO test CD, there is no need to reverse the phase of your speakers. |
