Integrated of Pre+Power??

Hi,

The 2 sets of under $5000 system that Joe had introduced so far both consists of integrated amp. Considering that it is almost impossible to get a good pre-power combination within the $5000 budget, is it recommended to start with a CDP with variable output and power ampcombination initially?

In this way, not-so-rich user like us can start with just the CDP-power amp, then add on another power amp or pre-amp later. Starting with an integrated amp will make the integrated amp redudent when upgrading to pre-power combination later.

Hello Jonathan,

In 1989, I was thinking like wise and attempted this:

Technics top of the range CD Player (late 80s)
YAMAHA MX800 Power Amplifier with input knobs
CELESTION SL600 speakers

The reason my system sounded so badly and flat was because I listened without a pre-amp. It was also very troublesome for volume control, and I could only listen to CD. Later I added a self built Marantz 7 pre-amp, the system simply came alive! I had better sound stage, and I could add tuners. The M7+Yamaha was then magic for me.

Like what you say, you can either build, buy a DIY built pre-amp, or buy a new pre-amp at a later stage. But when? Also, you have to be sure the pre-amp is of some standards, otherwise you will have more headaches. Matching is also something you have to consider.

The CD player really cannot have the drive capability to drive power amplifiers. The op-amp in most CD player can only give about 20mA of current. This is really miserable. You need a pre-amp to provide the drive capability.

There is nothing wrong with Integrated amplifiers. They can sound very very good. If you buy a pre-amp, you can still use it as a power amplifier. Otherwise, you can sell it away when you buy a pre-power setup. Getting rid of old equipment is part and parcel of playing HiFi, take it as school feed paid lah?

I disagree with you about no good pre-power setup in under $5000 system. If you reserve S$1200 for speakers, S$300 for stands, S$700 for CD player, you still have about S$2000 for the pre-power amplifiers. Hunt around and you should be able to find many decent performers.
