Chopping Board Mania

Hi Dr. Hi Fi,

I 'double click' on Dr Hi Fi icon but there is nothing. May be my notebook needs repair. Reason for writing is...... I have 3 pairs of speakers. Impulse Ta'us, Sonus Faber Minima Amator and Rogers LS3/5A. My living room is not very big and coupled with children at home, I have to move my speakers when I want to listen to music (why buy so many speakers?).

Ta'us are horn loaded speakers, they are heavy. Minima Amator are sitting on Atacama SE24, stands, lead filled toabout 30kg each. LS3/5A is on home made wood stands ( can not see day-light, translate into Chinese, but proud of them. They are made of chopping boards at both ends with two 28 inches pine wood rods, from Ikea ).

Moving them out on Friday night and keep them on Sunday night will be a challenge if I do not have an innovative idea. Atacama stands are sitting on top of two chopping boards with spikes. From the bottom ( the side facing the floor ) of chopping board, I drilled 3 holes and tighten3 bolts to the bottom of the stand (fortunately there are three holes at the center of the stands to serve this purpose).

Now the chopping board is part of the stand. I nail down 4 plastic-foot on the chopping board. Now I can move the whole stand with speaker around the house (HDB). Ta'us are floor-standing speakers and using the same concept, they are sitting on 3 cm chopping boards. Same for LS3/5A. Bravo, I can move all the speakers with ease. I laugh at myself and wonder what a crazy idea. I listen to the music and like all the new arrangement too.

Now, I need to seek your advice. Do speakers must sit on spike if we have concrete floor? What do you think of chopping board idea?If you guys want to take a look and have a good laugh, you are most welcome to my house. No red wine, no expensive food but a can of cokeand to know each other. Thank you. Regards.

Andy

Hello Andy!

I admire your courage and determination!

According to Newton’s laws, you need a mass interface for force to transmit from one body to another body. Using spikes on speakers is isolating the speaker from the floor. It will improve the sound of the speakers for sure.

If your chopping are thick enough, I think the problem is not that bad. It is better than scratching your floor tiles.

By the way, are the chopping board on wheels? This will affect the sound stage to a certain degree!

Why not you post some pictures? I would like to have a look! Since there is no red wine and expensive food, I think sending photos will do!

(sometimes we might be updating the site, so during that time you will not get anything. Please just retry after a while, you should be able to load again)
